My Hip Replacement Journey: A Step Toward Pain-Free Living

For as long as I can remember, my hips have been a problem waiting to happen. Severe osteoarthritis runs in my family—I inherited it from my father—but I also suspect that my years as a hockey goaltender as a young boy didn’t do me any favors. The constant strain, the quick lateral movements, and the pressure from repeatedly dropping into the butterfly position likely accelerated the wear and tear on my joints.

Eventually, the pain became impossible to ignore. Daily activities, from walking to sitting for long periods, became a challenge. It was time to take action. So, I took the plunge and had my first hip replacement surgery. And to say I’m amazed at the progress would be an understatement.

A Modern Medical Marvel

Medical science has come an incredible way. Gone are the days when joint replacement meant weeks in the hospital and months of bed rest. I was prepped and wheeled into surgery at 8:00 AM, and by 5:00 PM, I was already back at my home office desk. That’s right—I went from a major surgery to working from home in the same day. Of course, recovery is still an ongoing process, but the efficiency and precision of modern hip replacement techniques are nothing short of remarkable.

Three and a half weeks later, I’m using a cane instead of a walker, and I can even do stairs again. The difference in mobility and pain levels is night and day. While I still have my other hip to address at some point, likely in the next 2-3 months, I already feel like I have a new lease on life.

Looking Ahead

This journey has reinforced my appreciation for modern medicine and how far we’ve come. What once would have been a long and grueling recovery is now a streamlined, efficient process that allows people to get back on their feet—and their lives—faster than ever. For anyone out there suffering from chronic joint pain and wondering if surgery is the right call, I can say this: It’s worth it.

For now, I’ll keep moving forward, one step at a time.

One Bad Day. Turning Tragedy Into Triumph

On September 9, 2008, in Sacramento, California, my life took a devastating turn. As I made eye contact with a driver and accelerated, believing I had the right of way, my front wheel lodged beneath a car, catapulting me from my motorcycle. “Oh, this isn’t going to be good,” I thought as I flew through the air.I collided with the wires atop a brown power pole and plummeted two stories into a planter box below. Something New: A Beautifully Savage Omen

On a cold winter morning in January 2023 while visiting my family on the Upper East in New York City, I was the first to wake up, crept quietly into the guest room bathroom and locked eyes with a tiny owl perched outside the window on the old fashioned air conditioner.
